Regtech after the hype

Regulation1 minute read

A decade ago, regtech promised compliance that ran itself. That did not happen. What did happen is quieter and more valuable: controls built into systems, evidence produced as a by-product of normal work, and reporting that can be traced back to its source.

The institutions getting value today treat regulatory technology as plumbing rather than a product.

Controls in the system, not around it

The biggest gains come from building controls into the systems where work happens, so evidence is a by-product rather than a separate task someone has to remember.

Reports that can be traced

Supervisors increasingly ask not just for numbers but for where they came from. Data lineage turns a two-week scramble into a short answer.

Good regtech is invisible. You notice it when the supervisor asks a question and the answer takes minutes.

Buy less, connect more

The market is full of point solutions. Most institutions need fewer tools, better connected, with clear ownership of the data they share.
